It's Shop Time! Upcoming Crops & Events

Letter From Team Digital - Sharon Topliss
Team

I have always loved Christmas. I was so excited that I used to sneak out of bed to squeeze the presents under the tree (before being hurried back to bed by my rather cross parents!) Christmas Eve usually meant a visit to the strawberry patch to pick fresh fruit for our dinner the next day. Only about half of the strawberries ever made it into the bucket but no one seemed to mind. We would usually spend Christmas day with my cousins and one or both grandparents, eating too much and lolling about in the heat. Today, it is still a family time although other things have changed. The strawberry fields are now factories and I am now the cross parent shooing curious children away. But one thing hasn't changed. I still love Christmas. Whether it is snowing or sunny for you, I hope you all have a happy and safe holiday this year. Merry Christmas!

Cheers

FeaturedDesigI have always thought of Christmas as a charitable time, a kind and forgiving time, a time when our hearts turn toward childhood memories and traditions, where we reminisce with loved ones of a time that seems far removed from the Christmas of today.  It is one day out of the 365 of the past year when people seem to open their hearts freely to others and all is forgiven with many rifts healed.  I think we expect too much of Christmas Day sometimes, we try to crowd into one day, apologies for the long list of uncharitable thoughts and unkind words or actions we have been guilty of the whole year.  I thought this little poem very apt.

Christmas is forever, not for just one day,
for loving, sharing, giving, are not to put away
like bells and lights and tinsel, in some box upon a shelf.
The good you do for others is good you do yourself...
~Norman Wesley Brooks, "Let Every Day Be Christmas," 1976

Christmas for me this year will be much like others over the last few years, with many of my immediate family living overseas in Britain, France and Australia, it will be a smaller family affair, spending time at each other’s homes with the obligatory Turkey Dinner at one of them and much fun and merriment pulling crackers, wearing silly hats, fighting your way through  mounds of wrapping paper and watching the dancing fairy lights on a magical Christmas tree.  Although I have lived in New Zealand for over 30 years I still uphold the very traditional ways of celebrating Christmas of my country of birth (Britain) and putting the Christmas tree up has always had special meaning to me, I spend an inordinate amount of time deciding on just the right placement of this shiny bauble or that dangly thing, that it has a tremendous therapeutic affect, it’s a time of introspection for me, remembering when my son was little and helped trim the tree to the present time when my dear grandson Lee has replaced his father with this delightful tradition. I love the traditions and the spiritual uplifting that Christmas brings and I hope all my friends at DSP have a very special Christmas and New Year.  I have another poem for all the special people at DSP.

FeaturedDesigCardWhen special people touch our lives,
Then suddenly we see,
How wonderful and beautiful
Our world can really be.

They show us how our hopes and dreams
Can take us very far,
By helping us to look inside
And believe in who we are.

They bless us with their joy and love
In everything they give…
When special people touch our lives,
They teach us how to live.

May peace be your gift at Christmas and your blessing all year through.

Member Spotlight: Doda

Spotlight

December's Spotlight Member is none other than Susan . . . but you will instantly recognise her as Doda (pronounced Doooooda).  Her gallery is full of beautiful layouts that reflect her love of texture. It is therefore, not surprising that although Susan “occasionally” tries “something artsy or graphic” she always finds herself drawn back to the casual paper-style layouts she does so well. Susan says she is just like her layouts – casual and down to earth.  “I really didn’t know this until I started scrapping and looking back through my gallery, but my home and life are a lot like my pages.”  She finds her inspiration in the kit pieces and pictures.  She builds the basic layout using the kit, adds the pictures and then grows it from there… From people to places, her gallery is packed with lovely layouts.

Congratulations Susan and thank you for being our member spotlight. Be sure to check out Doda’s Gallery, read more about Susan HERE and the Scraplift the Spotlight challenge for December.

It's Shop Time

Shop Time Inspiration by Erica

It’s time to SHOP… let’s get those baskets at the ready.

Christmas Gift Giving

Christmas Gifts

"It's not how much we give but how much love we put into giving"
Mother Teresa

Today Christmas is a time when we exchange gifts and show that we care about each other.  The tradition of giving gifts in this season owes its origin to the Magi who came from the east of Jerusalem to greet the Babe in the manger with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh but in more recent world history, giving gifts at Christmas dates back to 4th century A.D. – the time of Saint Nicholas (later called Santa Claus).

Some of us still find it difficult to find the perfect Christmas gift for the special people in our lives. But it doesn’t have to be so hard. There are a wealth of ideas here.
Frame1This Lighted Resin Frame has been beautifully hand painted and comes with the added effect of  flashing lights to keep to entranced all through the holiday season and for many years to come. Size 4 x 6” photo frame. Two AA batteries are required for operation.Shop2

"Memories are perhaps the best gifts of all."
Gloria Gaither

Giving personalized gifts brings with it an added, special meaning to that gift, it says to the receiver, a lot of thought, care and love went into creating their gift. These small, personal albums will quickly become treasured possession that will be handed down for generations.

Inspiration for New and Advanced Digital Scrappers!

Digi-Scrapper Inspiration by Mandy

More than just a date – make a design statement!

Many1Ranked right up there in terms of importance, along with good design and lovely photos, is one small, but key ingredient – the date: that simple little group of numbers that places a treasured memory into a specific time frame and give it context.

I am sure you have at least a couple of old photographs lying around in an album or box (possibly even handed down from a grandparent) that are sadly lacking in details. As you gaze at these treasures you keep wondering why no one bothered to supply the information, even if written softly in pen on the back… Would you really want future generations to look at your scrapbook layouts and think: Who are they? When was the photograph taken?  Perhaps it seemed obvious at the time… like a CHRISTMAS photo, but in a few years time will you remember which Christmas?

Mandy2Modern digital cameras automatically store information like the date when a photograph was taken, but don’t for one minute think that anyone is going to scratch through millions of stored digital photographs to try and date one! If a memory is worth keeping on a layout, it is worth supplying that tiny piece of information to go along with it.

These days the date is no longer a little piece of information, tacked onto the side of a photograph like an after-thought, scrapbooking has taken this functional little piece of information and turned it into a key element on the layout. The date has become a design statement in its own right!

Mandy3Match your date to the style of your layout. Then there are dates that can act as embossed layers on a page, little date charms, date tags, and date strips that can be popped into pockets on your layout.

Circles are an eye-catching design feature, and that style can be continued with circular dates, from the small round stamped or embossed date that can be dropped over a photograph or paper, to words arranged in circles of dates, to large circular date elements.

Whether your layout is grungy, elegant, graphic or paper styled – there are a multitude of different dates to suit, so you have no excuse not to date!

RELAX and enjoy your holidays!

One of the best aspects of the holiday season is the multitude of photo opportunities.  Unfortunately, one of the most daunting aspects of the holiday season is the multitude of photo opportunities!  Every year, at the end of December, I'm faced with a hard drive full of photos and absolutely no creative energy left with which to showcase them.

Last year at this time, I created a board book ahead of time and was able to add my photos and journaling throughout the month.  That was great!  My family has looked through it all year, enjoying the memories.  This year, I didn't get organized enough to do that, so I'm giving myself a break.  Instead of making sure I capture and explain every detail of every event, activity, and tradition, I'm going to relax.  I'll get plenty of photos, no worries there, but I'm not going to stress myself out trying to make a layout for each.  After all, we're supposed to enjoy this season right?

So, my plan (and please, feel free to join me):
I'm going to practice my low light photography skills
I'm going to make a great holiday card to share with my family and friends.
I'm going to play with some hybrid techniques and Beyond the Layout products for some last minute gifts.
I'm going to go shopping for when I'm rested and ready to create!
And at the end of the season, I'm going to make a two-page layout spread with just the highlights and favorite photos.
MegDec
And I'm going to relax.  Recharging your creative energy is just as important as recharging your camera batteries, so be sure to take care of yourself and enjoy your holiday season!
