Letter From Team Digital - Lauren Bavin

Team

How can it be September already - every year it seems that time fly’s by faster.

Life is fuller and more hurried than ever before and often in the rush the small things in life are forgotten. That’s why I truly believe scrapbooking is a great addition to my life. By taking time to do something I enjoy I am doing double duty - not only having fun doing something I love but also allowing the small happenings in life to be remembered.

The layouts I love the most aren’t necessarily those documenting big events like birthday’s holidays and vacations, but often those documenting the small things - things that might easily get forgotten in years to come. Things like phrases and sayings that children have when they are young, tender moments between generations, favourite clothes or food. There are so many things we can document in a scrapbook page that might otherwise get forgotten.

Why don’t you take time out this month to scrap the small stuff - in the end it may make for big memories.

TeamLaurenAt DSP September and March mark very exciting months. These 2 months are scheduled for the semi annual Digital Elite Team contest.

In this elimination style contest many members compete for a place on DSP's DET (Digital Elite Team). This group of extremely talented people are the creative team who help promote the designs sold in the DSP store.

Its always a very hard task to whittle down more than 100 entries to the final few who make the team, and the designers who are the judges spend many hours pouring over the incredible layouts submitted each round.

If you haven’t been part of a DET contest before check out the galleries over the coming weeks and perhaps sign up yourself next time around.

Celebrate life’s little moments this September!

DesignerOne important thing that scrapbooking has made me think about is the need to celebrate life’s little moments, to stop and take photos of everyday happenings, even if I don’t get pages made of them. Days seem to pass with ever increasing rapidity – for folk like our little Josh and Izzy, the time between Father Christmas visits is a lifetime, yet for us, it seems we have no sooner packed away the decorations than its time to take them out again! Can you believe its now September – yes, already almost three-quarters of the year has passed and we are rapidly getting to the time when we will hear Christmas carols being played in every supermarket, see ads which insistently remind us of how many shopping days are left in which to spend our hard earned cash!

September is a month of change – here in the Southern hemisphere we are busy spring cleaning homes (as time off from scrapping allows!) and pruning gardens, in the Northern I guess you are doing whatever is required to get your homes ready for the coming winter months. Celebrate the changes by being “in the moment” with the tasks that need to be done, enjoy the comfortable feeling of the routine of the seasons.

Many of you see children start a new year at school in September (ours start at the “right” time of year, lol, January, the 1st month!), however “busy” you are, try to take time to enjoy their moments with them, you will not believe how quickly they grow, how soon they will be ready to fly the nest.

September is always a special month for us, 34 years ago, in September, Ray and I were married; the start of what has been an amazingly happy married life. I often say that the best decision I made in life was choosing the very best husband in the world! I give thanks every day and certainly married life has been, and continues to be, full of little (and big!) moments to celebrate!

Birthday1Birthday2Birthdaytwo

Most celebrations go better with cake – I have had such fun designing my Birthday Girl kits and “Decorate a Digital Cake Quick Click” (one way to have calorie free cake!) with which to scrap Izzy’s third birthday – I hope you have as much fun using them as I have.
Have a wonderful September,

With hugs,
Meryl

It's Shop Time!
Shop Time Inspiration by Erica

It’s time to SHOP… let’s get those baskets at the ready.

Creating layouts is fast and fun when using Quick Clicks.  What are they I hear you ask - good question and I'm glad you asked!

"The Quick Click Template system is a wonderful product that gives you the creative license to make unique layouts by filling in the "blanks" (shapes). "

"The design work is done...you won't have to think about placement of your photos or accent papers because we have carefully designed these "interactive sketches" for you! Scrapbooking just got a turbo boost with this intuitive product and now you can get MORE pages done! Quick Clicks include multiple pieces (12x12 PNG files*) which act like an interactive sketch - All you need to do is stack all the numbered layers in order, add in your photos and decorative papers, and fill in the shapes (easy instructions are included) for a layout that is truly yours! The template system is very flexible and can be used many times; just change the photos and papers and, voila!!, a whole new layout in no time at all. For a different look you can choose not to use any of the "decorative pieces" like the themed shapes or inked edges. A sample layout is included in the zip file to spark your creativity. *PNG Files are transparent files and are compatible with many software programs. Software Requirements: This Quick Click Template System is only compatible with programs that support a magic wand tool. Software programs that can currently use these templates include - Photoshop 6 or higher, Photoshop Elements 2 or higher, Paint Shop Pro 7 or higher, PhotoImpact recent versions, Digital Image Pro recent versions, Picture It version 7 or higher, and some Corel Paint programs recent versions. Not currently supported - Hewlett Packard Creative Scrapbook Assistant, FotoFusion by Lumapix, or Creating Keepsakes Scrapbook Designer Program."

So when you're short on time or stuck for inspiration, these Quick Click Templates are the answer to your prayers.

Inspiration for New and Advanced Digital Scrappers!

Digi-Scrapper Inspiration by Mandy

Retro, Sunrays, Starbursts and Super-Sized Titles.

I have noticed quite a few advertisements and posters featuring retro designs, sunrays and their variant the starburst. Now that I am aware of it, I seem to see these fun and funky design styles appearing all over the place, including scrapbook layouts.

If you want to try this effect, there are a couple of kits with those papers, like Tina Chambers' Sunny Side Up and Lisa Carter's Comic Birthday Kit. Another great place to start is with Elizabeth Weaver’s Still Groovy QC two-page template. You can use the starburst template to cut your backgrounds, or take it one step further and try different effects, blend modes or apply layer styles for a totally new look.

MyGirlModularNotice how your eyes tend to follow the flow of the rays – either inwards towards a single focal point, or outwards along the rays if there are multiple photographs. The sunray or starburst can be teamed with retro funky flowers, or pop art elements; or given a modern twist with circles, bubbles and stars and modern flowers.

If the starburst or sunray doesn’t grab your attention, have a look at Elizabeth’s new Modular Playground - a fun contemporary quick click with a retro feel.

The other design style that has grabbed my attention, is the giant, super-sized TITLE. All layouts usually have some sort of title, but in these layouts they are more than just a title. Instead, the title forms a major part of the layout’s design structure, in some cases becoming the focal point of the piece. Whether used to clip photographs, frame photographs, clipped as an edge to a photograph, or are giant alphabets or word art elements  – they are guaranteed to jump out of the gallery..

Elizabeth Weaver has some gorgeous Super-Sized quick clicks which make this style a snap to try out:

BeachyFamilyBoyGirl

Beachy Keen                            Family Matters                           My Boy My Star                      My Girl My Bloom

Some of my all time favorite sets are Lauren Bavin’s Me her Alpha Mosaic and Birthday Mosaics and of course Those Were The Days. Try using Lauren Bavin’s new Giant Acrylic Letter for those layouts where you would like photographs or journaling to show through – very trendy at the moment!

 Me DaysAcrylic

ME                                            Those Were The Days               Giant Acrylic Letter

Finally, papers with scalloped and die-cut edges will continue to be a design trend. Becky Soto’s Sweet Beauty will work well for those ultra feminine layouts, or for a more contemporary look, her new Scattered Row QC is simply stunning. More about edges next time…

Journal Your Way Back To School!

GeorgeHere in the Northern Hemisphere, it's Back to School time for our little, and big, kids.  Every year we take the requisite First Day of School photos, buy the supplies, meet the teachers, and soothe the First Day jitters.  It tends to be an overwhelming time for kids and parents alike.  Lots going on and adjusting to new schedules and routines doesn't leave much time for reflection.  I have pictures from my daughter's first day of Kindergarten with absolutely NO journaling attached!  How is that possible?  Such a huge milestone from only a couple of years ago and my memories of it are hazy and incomplete.

This year I've challenged myself to capture all those bits and pieces that make up the beginning of the school year and I invite you to join me!  I'm starting before school starts with some of the routines and rituals that signal the start of a year to me by making this layout about the social story books I create for my son each year.

They help him prepare for the year and give me a visual way to help him through those transitions.  Looking back at them, we see how much he and his needs have changed.  I love having a layout documenting this process in his scrapbook to show how we prepare for school each year!
DSP Designer Suzanne C. Walker has done a layout about a daily ritual she shares with her girls as they leave home each day.

SuzThis is such a sweet moment between mother and children that might have easily become forgotten over time.  Now an integral part of their school day will be remembered and possibly continued into the next generation!

Two examples of school time details that are in our memories and now our scrapbooks.  Without the journaling, these memories would have faded.  The social stories I made will probably end up in a box some day, and photos of Suzi's tradition could never convey the details so important to her family.  As much as we all love our photos, we need that journaling to share the information and meaning behind them.

Join Suzanne and me in the Deeper Than The Date forum for monthly journaling prompts and challenges.  This month the concentration will be on Back To School, specifically using conversational journaling to jot down our kids' thoughts about going back to school.  Suzanne has created a fabulous child's handwriting font for all participants, to give that extra bit of child-like enthusiasm to your pages!

No matter what rituals, routines, or conversations you choose to document this month, be sure to get them written down and into your scrapbooks for your whole family to enjoy.  And whatever you do, don't send your first born off to Kindergarten without writing down every detail of that life changing event!

Check out the DET gallery for fantastic examples of this current scrapbooking trend!  Here are a few to get you started:
