Letter From Team Digital - Tina

Hi All

Tina's LetterAs the 90 degree heat hits my face and the humidity washes across my skin, I sigh, and say, "It's July, welcome to Ohio!". I will fully admit that summer is not my favorite season in this great state. I love fall, I love the spring. In summer, we rarely get days that are beautiful. The nights are close & muggy, but they do allow us a glorious visage across the sky. I love to sit on the hammock in front of my house with my son and try to point out Cassiopeia, Perseus, and Orion shining bright in the sky.

There are elements of summer that I do love of course. No school, vacation, lazy days, swimming, roasting marshmallows, no bulky sweaters, Independence Day. Fireworks falling from the inky black and the smell of burgers still fresh on the grill. There are plenty of opportunities for memory keeping in the summer. Perhaps more than in other times of the year even. So, we hope you will share your memories of this season with us at DSP. And for our friends on the other side of the orb, we look forward to your winter layouts as well! They might even give some of us relief to see in other parts of the world you can't currently fry an egg on the sidewalk ;)

Happy scrapping and enjoy your current season, whatever it may be!

DesignerSummer has hit my area of the world, along with all its heat and humidity.  Summertime for me means trips, not only the daily ones to the pool, or the beach, but also vacations.

Most of us take lots of photos while on vacation, which of course need to be scrapped when we return home!  If you're like me, your photos are usually of the cool places you go and the neat things you see, scenery, etc.  While it's easy to get mesmerized by that stunning sunset, don't forget to snap plenty of shots of the people you are on vacation with.  These make for such memorable additions to your scrapbook pages, yet they are the easiest to overlook.  Most of my vacations are spent with my family, and I can tell you it is all too easy to get caught up in the excitement of being together and doing things and simply forget (or put off!) taking those special photos.

So, I encourage you, make a note if you have to, but by all means be sure to capture those near and dear to your heart while on vacation.  Because chances are, if they mean enough to you to take a vacation with them, you're going to want to cherish those memories forever.  Enjoy your summers!

Inspiration for New and Advanced Digital Scrappers!

Digi-Scrapper Inspiration by Mandy

Working with patterned papers – A LITTLE GOES A LONG WAY

Ever seen beautiful patterned papers in a kit and thought – ‘lovely, but too bold for me!’ or ‘what would I do with those patterns?’

Stop wondering. There really is a WHOLE LOT that can be done with patterned papers. Try teaming up swirls, circles, flowers and stripes, and you will be amazed at the results!

  • If you feel the paper is too ‘busy’ use it in small sections to cover a frame, cut a paper strip, or photo matte. A little can go a long way on a layout.
  • Cut a couple of tags from the stripes and circle or floral papers.
  • Cut buttons, or place circles of the patterned paper behind glass pebbles.
  • Try paper piecing.
  • Cut paper ribbon strips.
  • If the paper has circles or flowers that can be cut out, turn these into elements using shapes from your toolbox.
  • Use the papers on custom fill alphabets – or just for one big monogram letter.
  • Overlap papers and elements that contrast either in texture, or pattern for effect.

Mandy1If you find that the colors in your photographs clash with the papers, or become lost, try turning them into black and white, or run them through a filter, or apply and effect. If something in the photograph matches a color in the papers, try masking to bring that color out of a black and white, or desaturated photo, to give it a more dramatic effect.

The idea is to focus on the contrasts – the plain and the patterned, the colors and the shapes, the size of patterns and textures. If the colors in the photo are too similar, or as busy as the papers, they will be lost. Contrast is what will give the layout impact.

Having fun with bright, summer kits!

Every summer we see an influx of color and playful elements in the DSP store.  Figuring out how to use these kits without overwhelming our photos can be a challenge, so I've put together a few examples to get you started.
Shiny Happy PeopleThe first technique is to very closely match the colors in the kit to your photos.  In my layout I used a kit by Erica Belton (Flowers In Her Hair page kit) that had a variety of pinks.  These perfectly matched my daughter's clothing and some of her chalk drawing.  Moving inward from light pinks to deep fuschia, I pulled the emphasis toward the darker tones in the photo.  The kit included a few blue and green elements that were perfect for pulling out the blue chalk and green grass in the photo, so that the pink didn't completely take over!
playNext I had two of Meryl Bartho's fun new kits, Outdoor Playground Page Kit and Outdoor Playground Page Kit Two, that are filled with playful elements in a rainbow of colors.  I wanted to use several of them with my colorful photo, so I paired them with a neutral colored background and frame.  There are five or six bright, primary colors on the page; but lots of open room (or white space) gives your eyes plenty of places to rest and the colors link the elements and photo together.

EmmaThe final technique could be considered the opposite of the previous one.  I loved every paper and element in Lauren Bavin's Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah Page Kit, so I needed to neutralize my photo instead.  I had a photo of my daughter sitting in the sun in a bright pink nightgown, playing with multi-colored dolls.  All those colors, though similar to the kit colors, would compete with and distract from it.  So I desaturated my photo a bit, creating a slightly sepia tone.  Putting the altered photo with Lauren's kit worked perfectly and all the warm tones created a wonderful effect.

Have fun playing with this summer's new kits and don't be afraid to try some new combinations!
